William Tam graduated from the University of British Columbia in 2007 with a Bachelor of Science in Genetics. He obtained his Chartered Accountant (CA) designation in 2013 and went on to gain his Chartered Business Valuator (CBV) designation in 2017.

William joined Smythe Advisory in 2014, and was promoted to Manager in 2017. Prior to joining the Firm, he was involved in providing assurance and tax services to owner-managed businesses in a variety of industries including construction, manufacturing and technology sectors.

Recently, William joined the Collaborative Divorce Vancouver society as an apprentice member and serves as a committee member in the BC Chapter of The Canadian Institute of Chartered Business Valuators (CICBV).

In his spare time, William enjoys watching and playing basketball and going to the gym.

Maninder joined the firm in January 2018 after spending more than twelve years at national firms. He specializes in working with privately-owned companies, guiding their shareholders in the Canadian corporate and personal income tax planning and compliance matters, including:

  • Succession and estate planning;
  • Tax reorganizations and restructurings to maximize their after-tax wealth;
  • Family tax and personal trust planning; and
  • Business mergers and acquisitions.

Maninder has completed all levels of the In-Depth Tax Courses and has also completed the Advanced Tax Issues for Owner-Managed Business course from CPA Canada. Since 2015, he has been teaching the In-Depth Tax Courses (Level I and Level II) with CPA Canada.

On a personal note, Maninder is a highly-motivated and results-oriented leader with a solid track record that demonstrates leadership, team building and people management skills. Outside of work, he enjoys spending time with his family, watching the news and reading finance and tax journals.

Prior to joining Smythe in January 2018, Sam worked at a national firm where she articled and obtained her CPA, CA designation. Sam has over ten years of experience and enjoys working with owner managed businesses providing accounting and tax services.

At Smythe, Sam’s focus is working with business owners across a variety of industries, including auto dealerships, manufacturing, retail and rental properties. In addition to her breadth of experience, she is also recognized for her dedication to providing exceptional client service.

Outside of work, Sam enjoys spending time with her family and being active outdoors.

Sarah graduated from McGill University and completed her Diploma of Accounting at the University of British Columbia. She later went on to obtain her American CPA designation in the state of Washington and is currently in the process of completing her US Masters in Taxation from Golden Gate University.

Sarah is focused on US and Canadian cross-border personal tax planning and assisting large organizations in providing tax compliance and consulting services to their cross-border employees. Over the years, Sarah has accumulated valuable experiences at a boutique firm as well as PwC.  

Outside of work, Sarah enjoys travelling to new places to practice yoga and also enjoys cooking.

Paul joined Smythe Advisory from KPMG, where he worked for 10 years primarily providing valuation and transaction advisory services in both Vancouver and London, UK. Paul is a Chartered Professional Accountant (CPA, CA) and a Chartered Business Valuator (CBV).

Paul is focused on helping his clients understand and realize the value in their businesses through transaction and valuation advisory services. His expertise includes private company divestitures and transaction evaluation and pricing. Paul also specializes in advanced financial modelling and valuation analysis in a variety of contexts, including litigation and dispute resolution, quantification of losses, tax and estate planning, and financial reporting. His industry experience includes infrastructure, technology, mining, food and beverage, real estate and manufacturing.

Sapna returned to public practice with Smythe in 2017, following eight fulfilling years as the executive director of imagine1day, a Canadian charity focused on education in Africa. Prior to this role, Sapna worked with KPMG in Calgary, Brazil and Vancouver, with a focus on international tax. Sapna specializes in personal Canadian and US taxation services, with a focus on providing cross-border income tax planning and compliance to US citizens and residents living or working in Canada, as well as Canadians who are moving to, working or own property in the US.

Sapna is a graduate of Bishop’s University in Lennoxville, Quebec where she obtained her Bachelors in Business Administration. She obtained her Chartered Accountant designation in 1999 and is a member of the Chartered Professional Accountants of BC. Sapna is also a graduate of the THNK School of Creative Leadership.

Outside of work, Sapna loves taking epic walks around the city and she is a passionate writer. She is also on the Board of G Day (United Girls of the World), West Coast Environmental Law and the Green Technology Education Centre.

Dean graduated with a Bachelor of Business Administration in Finance in 2008 and obtained his CA designation in 2012. He began his accounting career articling with a national firm and has primarily worked in tax since 2014. As a tax manager at Smythe, Dean specializes in Canadian tax compliance and planning for private and owner-managed companies across a wide variety of industries. Recent projects include, advising on corporate structures, corporate loss planning strategies and estate planning.

Outside of work, Dean enjoys playing hockey and guitar and is a huge New England Patriots fan.

Leo graduated from Simon Fraser University with a Bachelor of Business Administration in Finance and Accounting. After graduation, he honed his skills in US tax at a boutique firm in Vancouver and has obtained both CA and US CPA designations. Leo also has a Master of Science in Taxation from Golden State University.

Leo has a broad range of experience in US and cross-border taxation for individuals and businesses. He offers advice on American citizens and corporations investing in Canadian corporations, cross-border ownership strategies and Canadians investing in US real estate.

Outside of work, Leo enjoys cycling, going to concerts and travelling.

Catherine grew up in Vancouver, BC, and attended the University of British Columbia where she received her Bachelor of Commerce degree in Finance and Transportation & Logistics. After completing the Diploma in Accounting Program, she went on to pass the Uniform Evaluation (UFE) in 2013, and obtained her CA designation in 2014. She also completed the three-year CPA Canada In-Depth Tax Course in 2017.

Catherine joined Smythe in 2015 and since then has provided personal and corporate tax compliance and planning services to a variety of clients, with a focus on Canadian and cross-border corporate tax issues.

Outside of work, Catherine enjoys traveling, baking and playing volleyball.

Matt was born and raised in the Fraser Valley and attended the University of the Fraser Valley where he graduated with a Bachelor of Business Administration. He joined Smythe in 2013 and obtained his CPA designation in 2016.

Matt is primarily focused on providing accounting, assurance and tax advisory services to private companies in various industries, including agriculture, professional services, hospitality and technology.  Within the Firm, Matt is active in the Technology Industry Group and passionate about student mentoring and development.

Outside of work, Matt enjoys snowboarding, playing hockey and softball, and travelling to new countries.
